0649 Esperia sulphurella

Family Oecophoridae: Oecophorinae

Wingspan 12-16 mm.

Flight period May and June

Descripttion

A small day flying moth, " Micro Moth " with a total wingspan of 12 - 16mm. A chocolate-brown moth, with lemon-yellow markings. It rests with a characteristic stance its antennae held forward, which are marked with whitish about two-thirds along their length.

The species name, 'sulphurella', derives from the bright yellow underwings which are briefly visible in flight but always hidden at rest. But the contrastingly marked antennae are always held forward in a conspicuous manner and give a good clue to identification.

It flies during the day, in May and June, and the larvae feed on dead wood.
