Common Mussel (Mytilus edulis)

Shell to 4 " ( 10cm ) Long

One of coastal Btritains commonest Bivalves. They occur in clusters often attached to rock and each other by threads extending from the openings oftheir distinctive blue black shell. Settles in places of long tides

Feeds on algae debris and protozoans

 

Mussels spawn in spring and theirr larvae remain suspended in currents before settling in other areas
